(G1) A Simple Inclusion Example

Last Updated: Oct 10, 2012 03:09PM PDT

As previously mentioned, the inclusion process takes just seconds and is done with a push or two of a button on both your G100 and the device that you're including.  But different Z-Wave device manufacturers all have their own way of making you do this same thing.  One might ask you to hold in a button for 3 seconds; one might ask you to push twice in succession.  The specific instructions will always come along with the Z-Wave device you're adding.

You'll know the device is successfully included to your G100 when you see it appear on your Dashboard, which will be our next subject.  But before we move there, let's go through a typical inclusion scenario so you can see how easy it is to include a new Z-Wave controllable device to your G100.

For this example, we will use a typical Z-Wave motion sensor and bring it to the G100, which is connected to your computer.  This is an easy example because the sensor works on batteries and you can simply bring it close to your G100.

Note: All Z-Wave devices must be powered on before they can be included.  Some plug into the wall, some work on batteries.  If you can't bring these devices to the G100 in a powered state, use the G100 in battery mode as described earlier.

First, put your G100 into include mode by pressing the Z-Wave button on the front panel once. The orange Ready light will blink slowly, meaning the unit is now ready to include a device.

Now let's look at our sensor and -- having looked at the product's instructions -- found that it requires you to push the button on the side of the product to put it into include mode.  Push this button and you'll see your G100's Ready light flutter quickly and to show you that the communication between the two devices has been made -- the sensor is now included.

After this quick flutter of lights to show the inclusion, your G100's Ready light should return to blinking slowly.  At this stage it is still in inclusion mode and you can add more devices to your system in the same way.  If you're done including devices, push the Plus button on the top of the G100 and you'll exit the inclusion mode.  You're ready to go!

Of course, you'll be able to check all this directly -- and more -- through the Dashboard which we will visit next.  But for now, understand that this is essentially the process of inclusion -- bring your G100 and the new device close together, push the buttons and make the inclusion.

Some devices, even though they are not fixed in a permanent installation, need to be plugged into the wall in order to be included with your G100.  A common example is a plug-in lamp module -- it must be plugged into the wall to get power, and if you disconnect the power, the inclusion can be lost.

For these situation and others where it's not practical or possible to bring the devices to your G100 for including, use the battery option and bring your G100 to the devices.

To exclude a Z-Wave device, which is sometimes desirable or necessary, you perform a process similar to inclusion.  Push the Minus button on top of your G100.  The Ready light will flash rapidly, indicating that it's in exclude mode.  Push the include/exclude button on the device you want to exclude.  The G100's Ready button will flutter for 2 seconds to show the communication has been made, then go back to blinking slowly.  Push the Plus button to save the change.
