(G3) Add Devices Via The Dashboard

Last Updated: Sep 03, 2012 09:12PM PDT

The Dashboard gives you visual information regarding all the controllable devices that you will bring into your system, and it's through the Dashboard that you confirm that they've been included, as well as set rules of behavior (such as notifying you with texts, etc.) for them, individually or in groups.

Click on the tab marked Devices.

You'll now see a set of menus that intelligently group your controllable devices.  When you include new devices into your system, your G300 automatically recognizes what type of device you've included and assigns it to a handy category.  This makes it easy for you to combine devices into "scenes" that work together, which we will describe in a later section.

Let's include a new device into your system.  Click on Devices in the main Dashboard menu, and then click the Add Devices sub-menu below it.  You will see a the screen below; select the type of device you want to add.  When you click Add, you'll see a brief reminder of the inclusion process, which is also described below:

Now it's time to include your first device into your G300.  For the sake of this example, we'll use a Z-Wave controllable thermostat.  If the thermostat was already installed in the wall, we could bring the G300 to it in battery mode.  But for this example, it's a new 'smart' thermostat that you've decided to add to your system.  Since thermostats (and all other electronic things!) need power, load the new smart thermostat with its supplied batteries.  When you're ready, bring it within 3 feet of your G300.

1) Put your G300 into learn mode by pushing the Z-Wave button on the front panel.  The Z-Wave light will blink slowly.

2) Follow the thermostat's instructions for putting it into include mode.  In the case of most thermostats, it will be an obvious button marked "include," "pair," "bind," or the like.  The thermostat instructions will tell you how to push or hold the button to make the inclusion.

 3) The Z-Wave light on your G300 will flutter rapidly to show that it has recognized (included) the device, and then return to blinking slowly. If you want to include more devices, you can by repeating the process for each device you want to include -- blinking slowly means the G300 is in include mode.  To exit include mode, simply push the Z-Wave button on the front panel again.

Now let's look at the Dashboard.  As you can see, the thermostat now shows up as a Climate device.

That's really all there is to it as far as including new devices into your system that you want to control.  You pair them to your  network, they show up in your Dashboard and now you can monitor and control their activity -- from anywhere.

As you bring new devices into your G300 system, you'll see each of them show up in their appropriate categories (lights, cameras, sensors, etc.)  From there they can be configured individually, and elsewhere in the Dashboard, you can make them work together with other devices as part of a Room or a Scene.

For our next step, let's learn how to make adjustments to an individual smart device through your Dashboard.

NEXT: Configuring Smart Devices

Note: While it's possible to include new devices without being in front of the actual Dashboard, it's more convenient to have the immediate feedback that you get from your computer screen with the Dashboard up.

Note: If you have to include devices when you're not in front of your computer screen, such as taking the G300 out in battery mode to built-in controllable locks or light switches, you can access your G300 through a laptop, tablet or smart phone.  Just log into your  system from any of these devices.
